Pumpkin Seed Math

How many seeds are in an average pumpkin? {Practicing our estimation skills again}
Would you believe there are approximately 500 seeds in an average pumpkin? Still don’t believe me, then read this book.
Today we practiced basic math skills by counting Jack’s teeth. Poor Jack, he had too many treats last halloween and now he’s loosing some of his teeth.
Opal had fun solving simple math equations by counting Jack’s teeth. Jack started out with 7 teeth but 2 fell out so now he only has…
Here’s how you can turn a simple pumpkin into a teaching tool.
- Remove the guts from your pumpkin and separate the seeds
- Wash and dry your seeds (Tip: Seeds need to be dried thoroughly,otherwise you’ll have difficulty sliding them into the fleshy part of your pumpkin)
- Carve your pumpkin’s face and make a notch in the fleshy part of the mouth. This is where your seeds will be craddled
- Finally, have your child solve simple math equations by adding or subtracting the seeds, aka Jack’s teeth
You could also use popcicle sticks to resemble Jack’s teeth.
Math~It doesn’t have to be boring!
BTW, someone remind Jack to brush his teeth this halloween! While your at it, someone remind my kids to brush there teeth as well.
